As part of Culturally Responsive Education, we emphasize the power of creating learning experiences for kids. We believe that through these experiences, students will be able to attach meaning to ideas beyond the classroom that will allow for authentic effective and cognitive engagement. Big ideas allow for students to create their own meaning that they can build on as a learner to help bridge their social, cultural and academic identities.

Equity and rigor are inextricably linked in education.  One cannot think about equitable educational experiences without considering the depth of thinking that all students are engaged in.  Likewise, students cannot engage in rigorous thinking without applying their own social identities and experiences to their learning.  We will examine the connection between equity and rigor as we reflect on how our systems, beliefs, and instructional practices allow for the opportunity for all students to engage in rich, meaningful learning experiences.
